Data Highlights
Maternal and child health (MCH) data helps us understand patterns, identify disparities, and inform efforts to improve health outcomes for families across New Mexico. The following data reflect both strengths and ongoing challenges in maternal and child health across New Mexico.

While positive trends are seen in areas such as breastfeeding and child well-being, gaps remain in access to care and maternal mental health support. Continued efforts are needed to improve access, reduce disparities, and support the health of families statewide.

In 2024, about 1 in 4 infants (23.1% of live births) in New Mexico was born to a woman receiving inadequate prenatal care.

Over 60% of prenatal care is covered by Medicaid in New Mexico, with stable utilization in recent years.

Among pregnancy-related deaths in New Mexico, 48% involved mental health as a contributing circumstance.

The percentage of children experiencing 0–1 adverse childhood experience increased from 72.7% to 77.0%, reflecting positive trends in protective environments.

Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System
(NM PRAMS)
The best source of data on mothers and babies. NM PRAMS is survey that collects population-based data on maternal behaviors and experiences before, during, and after pregnancy. PRAMS is used to inform public health policies, covering topics like prenatal care, health insurance, and postpartum health.
March of Dimes Perinatal Statistics (PeriStats)
PeriStats brings together data from various government sources to offer current maternal and infant health statistics, including measures such as preterm birth, infant mortality, tobacco use, Cesarean delivery, and insurance coverage. Many indicators can be explored by race, ethnicity, and maternal age.
NM Maternal Health Dashboards
These interactive dashboards provide insight into maternal and infant health across New Mexico. One dashboard uses birth records and PRAMS data to show trends in demographics, behaviors, and outcomes, while another focuses on severe maternal morbidity using hospital data to better understand serious pregnancy-related complications.
