The New Mexico Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) is part of the Maternal Health Program within the Family Health Bureau of the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH). It was first convened in 2018 and is tasked with reviewing every death of a New Mexico resident occurring during or within 1 year of the end of pregnancy.

The MMRC determines:

  • Underlying causes and circumstances surrounding deaths, such as substance use disorder (SUD)

  • Preventability of each death

  • Recommendations to prevent future deaths
